Striker fired pistols have been the rage for years, which meant that HK’s DA/SA pistols were less appealing to several American shooters. Secondly, the company also wanted to compete better in the United States civilian market. Firstly, the company wanted to make a pistol with a single stage trigger and a clean break, in contrast to their double action/single action autos that they had become famous for before then. The main motivation for HK to build the VP9 was two-fold. In fact, HK claims that the VP9 began production in mid-2010. The VP9 was officially released in 2014 as we noted previously, but it was also in development for many years before then. In fact, in many regards, the VP9 is simply a further development of the P30, with the primary difference being that the P30 is hammer fired whereas the VP9 is striker fired. Before, Heckler & Koch had been arming law enforcement units and militaries and security forces all over the world with guns such as the HK MP5 and UMP submachine guns, HK416 rifle, the P7 pistol, the USP and USP Compact, P2000, the HK45, and the P30.
The VP9 was also very far from being the pistol that gave HK a name for themselves.
That title would belong to the HK VP70, which truly was the first factory produced polymer framed, striker fired pistol, beating out the Glock 17 by around a dozen years. Run it in multiple magazines as well.ģrd HST, Gold Dot, Golden Sabre, PDX, Ranger etc. I don’t think you need to run thousands of rounds to be sure but make sure you shoot one handed, load the mag fully and top off etc. You need to try 50 or 100 rounds to make sure it runs fine. After that it should run most any decent ammo.Ģnd defensive ammo needs to run in your gun and the fact is even the best ammo may not run in the best gun. Work in your VP9 with a box or 4 of 124 grain NATO or 147 grain stuff or any hotter or heavier ammo. Many guns don’t like aluminum cased ammo. Regardless of mass production and what should be interchangeable parts, always test the defense ammo you choose with your firearm before putting it in active rotation.ġst aluminum cases ammo is usually very cheap and very low powered. All of that said, the big test is what will run reliably in your firearm. The Lucky Gunner ammo test is a good resource in that it's a consistent testing method for the data they have, which is what you want for the sake of comparison. I can generally find Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot for cheaper and in the comparisons I've seen Hornady, Critical Duty or Defense, doesn't perform notably better. I've never been a particular fan of Hornady. A quick Google search does show a number of threads for the 45ACP. To his point, I remember back when I was a more active member of the HKpro forum that there were a number of people that reported issues with feeding for 45ACP Hornady ammo in the HK45 However, I don't remember of any issues with the 9mm Hornday.
